Amsterdam for the Golden Age

The Rijksmuseum at opening, the canal ring on foot, and two stars at altitude.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam's centre is small enough to cross in half an hour, which means the difference between a good visit and a bad one is timing, not distance.

Museums at opening, canals in the late afternoon, dinner high up — that sequence avoids every crowd in the city.

Day 1Masters before the crowd

  • Rijksmuseum

    09:00 · Do

    Rijksmuseum

First entry, Gallery of Honour first. By eleven it is a different, louder museum.

  • De L'Europe

    14:00 · Stay

    De L'Europe

On the Amstel, a few minutes from the flower market and away from the worst of the centre.

Day 2Water and a view

  • Ciel Bleu

    19:30 · Eat

    Ciel Bleu

Twenty-third floor. Ask for a window table at the time of booking, not on arrival.

Know before you go

  • Cyclists have right of way and will take it; look both ways twice before crossing a bike lane.
  • Canal cruises are best in the last hour of daylight, when the bridge lights come on.
  • Book the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum online; neither reliably sells at the door.
