Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town's weather makes the schedule, not the other way round. Keep the mountain and the beaches flexible, and anchor the fixed hours around the V&A Waterfront.

Day 1Waterfront and art

  • The Silo Hotel

    14:00 · Stay

    The Silo Hotel

The pillowed glass windows are the whole point — ask for a mountain-facing room.

  • Zeitz MOCAA

    16:00 · Do

    Zeitz MOCAA

The carved atrium alone justifies the ticket; allow two hours for the upper galleries.

Day 2Up the mountain early

  • Platteklip Gorge Trail

    06:00 · Nature

    Platteklip Gorge Trail

Platteklip is steep, shadeless and roughly two hours up. Start at first light and carry two litres of water.

  • Kloof Street House

    19:30 · Eat

    Kloof Street House

Book the garden if the wind is down; it is a ten-minute walk from the trailhead side of town.

Day 3Penguins and the peninsula

  • Boulders Beach

    09:00 · Nature

    Boulders Beach

Boardwalk tickets are sold at the gate; the early hour beats both the tour buses and the wind.

  • The Athletic Club & Social

    21:00 · Nightlife

    The Athletic Club & Social

Smart dress, proper cocktails, and a room that feels like a members' club without the membership.

Know before you go

  • The South-Easter wind runs hardest from November to February; it closes the cableway with little warning.
  • Book the peninsula day with a car — the Cape Point road is the point of the drive.
  • Water restrictions come and go; check current guidance before a long stay.
