Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town gives you a mountain, two oceans and a wine region within an hour of each other. The only real planning question is the wind.

Do the mountain on the clearest morning you are given and move everything else around it.

Day 1Harbour and gallery

  • The Silo Hotel

    14:00 · Stay

    The Silo Hotel

Check in and take the sixth-floor windows for an hour before anything else.

  • Zeitz MOCAA

    16:00 · Do

    Zeitz MOCAA

The atrium alone is worth the ticket; allow two hours for the upper floors.

  • Kloof Street House

    19:30 · Eat

    Kloof Street House

Ask for the garden if the evening is still — it usually is in late summer.

Day 2The mountain, early

  • Platteklip Gorge Trail

    06:30 · Nature

    Platteklip Gorge Trail

Start at first light. Check the cableway wind report the night before and again at dawn.

  • Boulders Beach

    14:00 · Nature

    Boulders Beach

Go for the late-afternoon boardwalk, when the colony is active and the coaches have left.

  • The Athletic Club & Social

    21:00 · Nightlife

    The Athletic Club & Social

A nightcap rather than a night out; the upstairs room is the quieter one.

Day 3Into the winelands

  • Delaire Graff Estate

    12:30 · Eat

    Delaire Graff Estate

Book the terrace for lunch and the tasting after, not the other way round.

Know before you go

  • Summer wind can close the cableway with no notice — keep the mountain day flexible.
  • The winelands need a car or a driver; tasting and driving do not mix.
  • Sunscreen is not optional, even on overcast days this far south.
