Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is flat, compact and built for bicycles — which makes it one of the few capitals where you can genuinely do without taxis.

Two days covers the centre and one excursion. Make the excursion Louisiana; it is better than anything you would add downtown.

The rooftop pool is at its best once the gardens fill and the lights go on below.

Know before you go

  • Bicycle lanes are fast and rule-bound; signal, and never stand in one.
  • Almost nowhere takes cash — a contactless card covers everything including the harbour buses.
  • Daylight in December is short; book the museum for the morning.
