Istanbul in Two Days, Across the Water

One great monument, one great meze table and the ferry ride between them.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Istanbul is a city best measured in ferry crossings. Cross once in the morning and once at dusk and you will have seen more than any coach tour manages in a week.

Keep the old city for the early hours and Karaköy for the evening; the crowds move in the opposite direction.

Day 1The old city at opening

  • Hagia Sophia

    08:30 · Do

    Hagia Sophia

Arrive at opening. The first hour is the only hour with quiet inside.

  • Karaköy Lokantası

    20:00 · Eat

    Karaköy Lokantası

Order the meze trolley rather than the menu, and ask for a table near the tiles.

Day 2The water, then the hill

  • Karaköy Lokantası

    13:00 · Eat

    Karaköy Lokantası

Lunch is the better-kept secret here — same kitchen, half the wait.

  • Hagia Sophia

    17:00 · Do

    Hagia Sophia

Come back for the exterior at golden hour; the square empties as the tour buses leave.

Know before you go

  • Buy an Istanbulkart at any ferry terminal — it works on ferries, trams and buses.
  • Prayer times close parts of working mosques to visitors; check the board at the entrance.
  • Dinner rarely starts before 20:00; book ahead for Friday and Saturday.
