Byzantine mornings in Sultanahmet, a long meyhane lunch in Karaköy, and the ferry in between.

Istanbul is best read slowly and on foot, with one ferry crossing a day to reset the pace. The old city asks for early mornings; the newer shore rewards long lunches.
This two-day route keeps each day on one side of the water, so you spend your time looking rather than commuting.
Day 1 — Sultanahmet at first light
08:30 · Do
Hagia SophiaArrive at opening. The first hour is the only quiet one, and the upper galleries hold the best light on the mosaics.
13:00 · Eat
Karaköy LokantasıCross by ferry and take a late lunch here — the mezze arrive on a tray and choosing by sight is part of it.
Day 2 — The water and the newer shore
12:30 · Eat
Karaköy LokantasıBook ahead for the second visit; the dining room fills with regulars by one o'clock.
17:00 · Do
Hagia SophiaReturn at the end of the day for the exterior in low sun, then walk down towards the water rather than back through the bazaar.
Know before you go
- — Shoulders and knees should be covered inside working mosques; women are asked to cover their hair, and scarves are usually available at the door.
- — Ferries take an Istanbulkart, which is cheaper and quicker than queueing for single tokens.
- — Friday midday prayers close some religious sites to visitors for around an hour.
