Kyoto's most photographed places still feel transporting if you arrive before the tour groups. The luxury here is not a private room but silence, cool air and enough time to continue beyond the first viewpoint.
This itinerary asks for two early mornings and gives the afternoons back. Use them for a garden, a bath and a meal chosen close to where you are staying rather than another cross-city journey.
Day 1 — The mountain of gates

Fushimi Inari-taishaStart before breakfast and continue beyond the first dense corridor of torii. The path becomes calmer as it climbs toward Yotsutsuji.
Day 2 — Arashiyama in the first light
07:00 · Nature
Arashiyama Bamboo GroveWalk the grove before eight, then continue toward the villa gardens rather than turning back with the arriving crowds.
18:00 · Nature
Fushimi Inari-taishaIf dawn is impossible, return near dusk for a different atmosphere and far fewer visitors on the lower trail.
Know before you go
- — Both routes involve steps and uneven ground; wear shoes intended for walking rather than appearance.
- — Shrines are active places of worship. Keep voices low and avoid blocking paths for photographs.
- — Kyoto's sights are spread out, so group each day by district instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
