Mexico City & Rio de Janeiro, Mexico & Brazil

These two cities make a natural pair: one inland and layered, the other coastal and vertical. Give each three nights and take the overnight flight between them.

Mexico City is at altitude, so arrive gently. Rio is at sea level and asks for the opposite — early starts before the heat.

The mole madre is the reason to come. Reserve at least a month out.

Day 2Mexico City, slow day at altitude

  • Museo Frida Kahlo

If you missed a room, the garden in late afternoon is the best part of the house anyway.

Day 3Rio, the beach side

  • Copacabana Palace

    14:00 · Stay

Sea-facing rooms are worth the difference; the pool deck is the calmest spot in the city.

Check visibility before you leave and buy cable-car tickets from the official operator.

Know before you go

  • Mexico City sits at around 2,240 metres — take the first day slowly and drink more water than usual.
  • Use hotel-arranged or app-based transport after dark in both cities and carry only what you need.
  • Rio's milder walking months are roughly May through October.
