Paris to Rome, Slowly and by Rail

Two capitals, one train, and no airport before dawn.

The overland route between Paris and Rome is the rare journey that improves the trip rather than interrupting it. You leave one city after a proper breakfast and arrive in the other in time for dinner.

Keep the first half Right Bank and unhurried, then let Rome be about three or four fixed points with long gaps between them.

Day 1 — Paris, Right Bank

Late entry is the calmest; start upstairs and work down towards the clock.

Day 2 — Last Paris morning, then the train

Day 3 — Rome on foot

Arrive at opening; by eleven the square outside is shoulder to shoulder.

Book weeks ahead. Sit at the deli counter rather than the back room if you can choose.

Know before you go

— Book rail tickets as soon as the timetable opens — prices climb steeply nearer the date.
— Rome's historic centre is cobbled throughout; bring shoes you can walk ten kilometres in.
— Italian kitchens close between lunch and dinner service, so plan around roughly 15:00 to 19:00.
