Milford Sound is a long day from Queenstown however you do it. The trick is to accept that, start early, and keep the day after deliberately empty.
This is the rare itinerary where the weather forecast should decide the order of your days.
Day 1 — The fiord
07:00 · Nature
Milford SoundLeave Queenstown before dawn, or stay at Te Anau the night before and halve the drive.
Day 2 — Slow lake day
10:00 · Nature
Milford SoundIf yesterday was rained out, go again — the waterfalls are at their best the day after heavy rain.
Know before you go
- — The Milford road closes for avalanche risk in winter; check conditions the morning you drive.
- — Fuel up in Te Anau — there is no petrol between there and the fiord.
- — Sandflies are relentless at the water's edge; take repellent.
