Reykjavík, Iceland

Iceland's capital is small enough to walk in a morning, which leaves the rest of the time for what you actually came for: water, weather and distance.

Two days is enough if you book the lagoon in advance and treat the drive as part of the experience rather than an errand.

Day 1Arrive and float

  • The Blue Lagoon

Slots sell out weeks ahead in summer. Late afternoon is the calmest, and it sits between the airport and the city.

Day 2Slow morning, long light

  • The Blue Lagoon

An early second entry, if you have time before the flight, is the emptiest hour of the day.

Know before you go

  • Weather changes hourly; bring a waterproof shell whatever the forecast says.
  • Showering before entering geothermal water is required and enforced.
  • Summer nights barely darken and winter days are short — plan outdoor time around the light, not the clock.
