Rome is most rewarding before the day gathers speed. Begin in the historic centre while shutters are still opening, then let lunch take up the space it deserves.

Know before you go
- — Book major monuments and sought-after restaurants before arrival; same-day availability is unreliable.
- — Central Rome is best explored on foot, but uneven stone streets make comfortable shoes essential.
- — Churches require covered shoulders and knees, even during the hottest months.
