Santorini, Greece

Everyone comes to Santorini for the same twenty minutes in Oia. The island rewards those who plan around that hour rather than into it.

Stay on the rim, eat inland, and see the caldera from a boat — that order makes a familiar island feel new.

Day 1The rim

  • Katikies Oia

    14:00 · Stay

    Katikies Oia

Cave suites are cool and dim by design; the terrace is where you will spend the afternoon.

  • Selene

    20:00 · Eat

    Selene

Twenty minutes inland to Pyrgos, and worth every one for the fava and the Assyrtiko list.

Day 2On the water

  • Caldera Sunset Sail

    15:30 · Do

    Caldera Sunset Sail

Afternoon catamarans take the hot springs and Red Beach, then anchor for the sunset from below.

Know before you go

  • Oia at sunset is genuinely crowded from 18:00; the sail, or your own terrace, is the better view.
  • Donkey rides up the Fira steps are best avoided — take the cable car.
  • May and October give you the light without the August heat or the cruise traffic.
