Zermatt allows no combustion engines, which changes the sound of an alpine village entirely — electric carts, sleigh bells, and the train.
Two days is enough for the Gornergrat, one long mountain lunch and a spa afternoon, whether or not you ski.
Day 1 — Arrive by rail

Day 2 — Up the mountain

Gornergrat RailwayFirst train for the clearest air. Sit on the right-hand side going up.

Chez VronyDown to Findeln for rösti on the terrace. Book — the sheepskin deckchairs go fast.
Know before you go
- — Cars stop at Täsch; the shuttle train to Zermatt runs every twenty minutes.
- — Mountain restaurants close mid-afternoon — last orders are often 15:00.
- — Altitude is real at 3,089m; drink more water than feels necessary.
