Things to Do on the Amalfi Coast, Without the Queue
A gardened terrace above a thousand-foot drop, a beach lunch you can only reach by boat, and the walk everyone should do once.

The Amalfi Coast rewards timing far more than ambition. Everything worth doing here is busy between eleven and four, and almost empty on either side of it.
This is how we plan it: one thing in the early morning, a long lunch, and the afternoon spent doing very little.
The morning walk
The Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Nocelle takes about three hours downhill, with the coast falling away beneath you the whole way. Start by eight in summer; there is no shade on the ridge.

The gardens and the cathedral
Villa Cimbrone in Ravello ends at the Terrace of Infinity — marble busts along a balustrade with the Gulf of Salerno a thousand feet below. Go at opening; the coaches arrive at eleven.
Down in Amalfi, the cathedral's striped Arab-Norman façade is best at dusk, with the cloister of interlaced arches behind it.

The lunch worth planning around
Da Adolfo has no road to it. The little boat with the red fish on its mast leaves Positano jetty through the morning and brings you to a wooden shack on Laurito beach for grilled mozzarella on lemon leaves.
For something more formal, La Sponda in Positano lights four hundred candles at sunset — book it for the last night.
Where to stay
Il San Pietro is cut into the cliff outside Positano with a lift down to its own beach; Le Sirenuse sits in the middle of the village, which is the better choice if you want to walk out to dinner.
