One great museum done properly, one dinner worth the reservation, and no running between boroughs.

New York, United States

The mistake visitors make with New York art is quantity. Two museums in a day leaves you with neither; one, walked slowly, stays with you.

This weekend puts a Tribeca base under an uptown museum day, with the park in between and one long dinner at the end.

Day 1Downtown base, uptown afternoon

Check in, then take the subway uptown rather than a cab — it is faster across town at almost any hour.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Pick two wings and skip the rest. Late afternoon is markedly quieter than midday.

Day 2Slow morning, long table

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Members' hours and opening time are the only calm slots on a weekend; arrive at the doors.

  • Gramercy Tavern

The tavern room takes walk-ins at the bar if the dining room is full — often the better seat anyway.

Know before you go

  • Museum admission is timed and cheaper online; New York State residents should check suggested-admission rules.
  • Restaurant reservations open 28 days ahead at most serious kitchens and go within minutes.
  • Weekend subway works are common — check service changes the morning you travel.
