New York

Everything is available; the skill is in the timing.

Arriving

Fly into JFK for the car service, LaGuardia for the shortest run in. Never plan anything for the two hours after landing at either.

Book this first

Dinner at 17:30 or 21:45 — the hours that are actually obtainable at the tables everyone wants.

What is worn

Sharp and dark downtown; softer uptown. Good shoes matter more here than anywhere: you will walk twelve thousand steps without noticing.

Money & manners

Twenty per cent, always, and it is not optional in practice. Add tax to every price you see.

The golden hour

Seven on a summer evening looking west down any cross street — the Manhattanhenge effect happens nightly in miniature.

The usual mistake

Booking Midtown because it looks central. Stay in the West Village or Tribeca and take cars uptown.

When to come

September — see where to go, month by month.
