Reykjavík

A small capital used as a doorway to everything outside it.

Arriving

Keflavík is forty-five minutes out — stop at the lagoon on the way in, with luggage stored there.

Book this first

The lagoon's premium slot, and any road trip vehicle, which sells out in summer.

What is worn

Waterproof everything. The weather changes hourly and nobody dresses up.

Money & manners

No tipping. Entirely cashless, including the petrol stations.

The golden hour

Midnight in June, when the sun never quite sets — or the black afternoons of February, for the aurora.

The usual mistake

Staying only in the city. The country begins twenty minutes past the ring road.

What moves the city

Season · 20 May to 25 Jul

Midnight sun

Near 24-hour daylight. No northern lights at all; bring an eye mask.

Season · 15 Sept to 10 Apr

Aurora season

Dark skies give the best chance of northern lights. Tours cancel at short notice in cloud; leave a spare night in the plan.
